Chapter 11: Nevaeh

She drove to her apartment in town, circled the massive rows of units, and stopped under the carport in her end space. Nevaeh closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead. She felt guilty for how she left her father and worried about how he might react, not because of how it affected her. Nevaeh was mostly immune to his remarks. But she always felt concern over how it affected him.

He didn't have the same ability to remove himself from a situation in his mind, to step back and assess whether or not it was worth it to get upset or to see if he'd missed a critical detail. He always reacted and asked for forgiveness later because it was easier.

To Nevaeh, it was an exhausting rollercoaster.

A knock on her window startled her.

Kali smiled at her and lifted a paper bag of food. The glass muffled her voice. “Brought dinner.”

Nevaeh opened her door, climbed out, and hugged her friend. “I'm so glad you were able to make it!”

“Me too.”

“So you’re heading down to visit Raelyn after this?” Nevaeh asked, locking her car and starting toward her apartment.

Kali hugged herself in her pink jacket. “Yes, and my parents. They're coming back to the States to meet Jorian. We're all meeting up in Santa Barbara. Is it okay if I crash here tonight?”

“Of course!” Nevaeh opened the door and flipped on the lights.

Kali answered her phone and then turned it to video.

“Eva!” Raelyn’s beach-blond waves swung as she neared the screen. “How are you?”

“Fine, tired. The usual,” Nevaeh laughed, though it felt a little forced.

“Hmm, sounds like not the whole truth,” Raelyn countered. “What’s bothering you, girl?”

Nevaeh grabbed two mugs from her cupboard and switched on her single-serve coffee maker. “Oh, no. Tell me what's up with you first.”

Raelyn didn't hesitate to share the news of her latest movie star client, who wanted a pair of special surf boards to decorate his pool patio.

Kali rolled her eyes and savored a sip of the coffee Nevaeh handed her.

“Sounds like someone must be a tiny bit,” Nevaeh pinched her fingers together within view of the phone camera, “possibly attracted to, maybe even infatuated with said movie star.”

Raelyn’s cheeks darkened. “Don’t tell me you’ve never dreamt of working for a movie star or dating one.”

“When I was in high school,” Kali replied. “It’s just not realistic for us normies.”

“A girl can dream, can’t she?” Raelyn showed them a picture of the art she was working on for the boards. “Cool tribal hibiscus design, yeah?”

Nevaeh always admired Raelyn’s artistic skills. “Beautiful. Your ability to stylize objects is phenomenal. When I draw a tree, it's like a line for a trunk, then a bunch of mad squiggles.”

Kali nodded beside her. “Got me beat, too. I can draw up house plans, but I prefer interior design stencils for anything aside from squares.”

“You two are both talented in your own ways,” Raelyn waved a dismissive hand between her and the screen. “And I told you, Eva, I’ll build you a board like I did for Kali.
